A Great Teammate Is a Great Listener
John W. Rogers Jr., chairman, chief executive and chief investment officer of Ariel Investments, whose mother was the first African-American woman to graduate from the University of Chicago Law School, in 1946, discusses leadership lessons from his Princeton days playing basketball and other lessons he’s learning along the way.
When John played basketball at Princeton, two lessons his coach taught the team and drove home stayed with him. The first lesson was caring about your teammates and thinking how you can help them succeed. The second lesson was that every detail mattered for the ultimate success of the team.
Of his own leadership, John constantly asks how he can create an environment where people ask the right questions, and tell each other what they really think. He feels it’s critical to keep reminding people that you really want to listen, then letting people know how much you’ve heard them, and that you respect their ideas.

Become that rare person where people know that your word is your bond and you’re going to do exactly what you say you’re going to do
